About ECW Ear Cleaning

Expertise

At ECW Ear Cleaning, I pride myself on providing a kind, caring, professional service, and am committed to making you feel comfortable and happy with your treatment. With over 15 years NHS experience as a Health Care Professional, working in both Community and Inpatient Hospital settings, I have considerable experience with Children, Adolescents, Neurodivergent Clients and those living with Dementia. I have a real passion for what I do, and that is reflected in the service I provide to you, before, during and after treatment.

I offer a mobile ear wax removal service in the comfort of your own home, and I am happy to cover, and travel across the Essex area.

I use state of the art new Otoscope technology which will allow me to look inside your ear, and show you before and after images of your ears, which you will be able to share with your GP should you wish to do so.

I provide both Microsuction and Irrigation services in your home depending on your suitability, which allows an opportunity for me to move between the two different techniques should I need to, inclusive of the price.  Occasionally I may need to use other sterile manual instruments, guided with a specula to remove any stubborn or hard wax blockages.

Microsuction & Irrigation are the most common and safe techniques to remove wax from the ear. Ear syringing  which was once offered on the NHS or by some GP Surgeries is not a service which many offer any more, therefore leading to lengthy waiting times. NICE Guidelines state that Ear Syringing is no longer a safe practice to remove wax and should not be used, thereby Microsuction and Irrigation are the gold standard practices of safe and effective methods of wax removal. Many different people can be affected by ear wax at any time, or at any age and is 100% natural however, the body should be able to naturally expel it from the body itself, but sometimes it may just need a little help. For any further advice, or just simply for you to ask any questions or concerns you may have, please contact me.

Fully Insured, Trained and Accredited, always maintaining and committed to providing a professional, open and honest service to you.

How do I know if I have too much wax?

    STRUGGLING TO HEAR

    RINGING IN THE EARS

    RINGING IN THE EARS

Hearing loss is the most common sign of too much wax build up in the ear, which can contribute to hearing loss. You or your loved ones may find that they are having to repeat themselves, or you are having to turn your TV up to the highest volume due to your hearing becoming more muffled and distorted.

    RINGING IN THE EARS

    RINGING IN THE EARS

    RINGING IN THE EARS

Also more commonly known as Tinnitus, the ringing or buzzing sound can be a result of excessive wax in the ear canal causing a blockage. If left untreated the symptoms of Tinnitus will persist.

    EARACHE

    RINGING IN THE EARS

A FEELING OF A FULL OR BLOCKED EAR

You may be suffering from a persistent sharp, dull ache in your ear causing pain and discomfort which may indicate wax build up. This would be particularly indicative of wax if you are not experiencing any Cold or Flu like symptoms or infections.

A FEELING OF A FULL OR BLOCKED EAR

A FEELING OF A FULL OR BLOCKED EAR

A FEELING OF A FULL OR BLOCKED EAR

If you are experiencing a blocked, full feeling, similar to that of trapped water within the ear, it could be a sign of excessive wax and that a wax plug has formed.

    ITCHINESS &/OR DISCHARGE

A FEELING OF A FULL OR BLOCKED EAR

IMPACT OF EAR WAX ON CHILDREN

Itchy ears are a sign that you may have too much wax. This itchy feeling can be a result of the ear naturally trying to expel the excess wax out. You may also notice a yellowish discharge which can be another sign of excessive wax, or even a mild infection present in the ear.

IMPACT OF EAR WAX ON CHILDREN

A FEELING OF A FULL OR BLOCKED EAR

IMPACT OF EAR WAX ON CHILDREN

For children, the impact of excessive ear wax not only presents as all of the already listed, but can also have a long term effect, if left untreated on their speech and language development, as well as impacting children of school age, hearing in the classroom. Ear wax can also cause discomfort for children bathing or swimming, as well as often contributing to recurrent ear infections.

    Treatments

    checking for wax using otoscope

    EAR WAX CONSULTATION

A consultation will be carried out in your home which can take up to 25 minutes. In this time I will undertake a thorough examination and assessment of the ears, and access the best form of treatment, should that be Microsuction or Irrigation. In the Consultation, I will use the latest in video otoscope technology which will allow me to show you exactly what is going on in your ears, showing you before and after pictures. I believe in fair pricing, and if there is no wax found, you will just be charged for the base line consultation fee. If there is wax found the Consultation price will be deducted from the Treatment cost. As part of the consultation any findings will be documented and can be shared with your GP should you wish to.

    MICROSUCTION

Microsuction is a safe and effective treatment undertaken by myself, fully trained and accredited, and is a pain free method used, to remove excess wax or blockages from the ear canals. Using binocular microscopes, this allows for better magnification and depth perception to have a clearer view of the ear canal, whilst using a fine sterile suction device, on a low pressure to remove any wax.  Microsuction is used when irrigation is not possible, for example, due to a perforated ear drum, or grommets, as water in the ear canal could enter the inner ear and cause complications.

    IRRIGATION

Warm water irrigation, is also a safe and effective method of removing ear wax. It gently removes wax using a controlled, low pressured warm water jet which is angled towards the ear canal as opposed to the blockage itself, which avoids pushing the wax further inside the ear canal, causing discomfort.

    Irrigation is not suitable for:

    • Those who have had, or have, a perforated ear drum,
    • Grommets,
    • Cleft Palates,
    • Ear Infections (Acute Otitis Externa)
    • Middle Ear Infections (Otitis Media)
    • Previous Ear Surgery

    FAQ's

    Microsuction ear wax removal

WHO IS SUITABLE FOR EAR WAX REMOVAL?

Ear Wax removal services that I offer are suitable and safe, for both adults and children, as well as those who wear hearing aids. A thorough assessment and consent form will be completed prior to treatment to determine the best and most suitable option for you.

DO I NEED TO PREPARE THE EARS PRIOR TO MY APPOINTMENT?

Ear Wax removal works best when the wax is softer, as hard wax can make the procedure more uncomfortable, and can prevent me from being able to remove all the wax in one procedure.

The most effective method of softening wax is by using olive oil.

    1. Using a small dropper bottle place 3 drops into the affected ear(s) THREE times a day for 5 days, for those wearing hearing aids, it is recommend to continue for 7 days.
    2. Massage the tragus (this is the harder area at the front of the ear) this allows for the oil to move down the ear canal.
    3. Ideally lie down, with your head on the side, with the affected ear facing upwards, allowing the oil to penetrate the wax.
    4. Repeat process on the other ear is necessary.

When oil is used in the ear, it is common for the ear to feel like it has become completely blocked, this is due to the oil filling any gaps around the wax. This is not concerning, and will resolve itself, or once microsuction is completed.

If olive oil has not been used prior to the appointment i will apply this myself, as often this is sufficient for effective wax removal. However, it is recommended for complete wax removal in one session to follow the above directions if at all possible.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?

Depending on how much wax or debris is visible, this can vary between each individual and your comfort level. In most procedures this can vary between 20 to 30 minutes, but i always allow for an hour per appointment. Sometimes not all the wax can be cleared in one session due to the level of impaction, or hardening of the wax, and you may be recommended to oil the ears before the next appointment. For ear wax which requires a return visit, this would be included in your initial price.

    IS EAR WAX REMOVAL PAINFUL?

Ear Wax removal should not be painful, however if the ear wax is particularly hardened, or impacted, then this can lead to intermittent discomfort. Microsuction sounds similar to a wind like noise in your ear, and irrigation, will feel warming to the inside of the ear canal, some even find the procedure relaxing. If however, you feel at any time uncomfortable you can let me know at any time, to stop.

HOW OFTEN WILL I REQUIRE TREATMENT?

Frequency of Ear Wax Removal will depend on the individual. It is better to treat the ear wax earlier, to ensure ear wax build up doesn't happen before it becomes hard and impacted. Some are more prone to wax build up, and may require treatment every 4 to 6 months, and those with hearing aids may be more frequent. Some patients however, can go between every

    6 to 12 months.

    ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

Both procedures I offer as a fully trained and accredited Clinician are considered extremely safe and effective. With any medical procedure there is always a small risk of complications, however, these are often minor and will resolve by themselves, therefore, are not cause for concern prior to your appointment. I will complete a full written assessment of which treatment is most suitable for you before starting the procedure, and that you are happy for me to go ahead.

Some of the side effects that can occur include:

    • Infection: Procedures can sometimes stimulate the skin inside the ear canal, however this is very rare. If after the procedure you experience any leakage or pain from the ear get in contact with myself.
    • Dizziness: Some experience a feeling of vertigo, or light dizziness during, or shortly after the procedure. This is only a temporary side effect, and should not last long once the procedure has finished.
    • Trauma to the ear: during the miscrocution treatment there is a small risk that the suction tube may scratch the inner wall of the ear, although rare, and if it does happen there is no need for concern. The area will heal itself with no long term or lasting damage. More serious traumas, such as perforated ear drums are incredibly rare.

WHY DO WE HAVE EAR WAX?

Ear Wax, also referred to as Cerumen, is a natural substance, which helps protect the ear by preventing dirt and dust entering the ear. Cerumen, is the first line of defense the ear has, and its main role, is to protect the delicate lining of the ear canal, from water, bacteria and fungus entering, leading to infections.

For some, the ears will naturally produce more than others due to:

    • Some health conditions such as eczema,
    • Swimmers, leading to swimmers ear ( External Otitis)
    • Using cotton buds,
    • Exostoses or Osteoma,
    • Earphones,
    • Autoimmune Diseases,
    • Narrow or hairy ear canals,
    • Hearing Aid users.

Having wax professionally removed, ensures the ear canal is protected, alleviating painful and uncomfortable symptoms, and in turn improving your hearing.

Frequency of Ear Wax Removal will depend on the individual, however for most it varies between every 6 to 12 months.

    wax facts

    WAX ISN'T WAX

Wax is an oily substance whos main function is to protect the ear. Despite its name, wax is made up of hair, dead skin cells and secretions from the glands inside your ear.

    SELF CLEANING PROPERTIES

The ear is a organ which is able to naturally clean itself. In most cases, wax should naturally migrate out of the ear itself, which in turn removes debris and dirt with it.

WHAT YOUR WAX SAYS ABOUT YOU

Wax can reveal a lot, even down to being able to identify your age, diet and health conditions. As we age, the wax can become more drier, often food and drink affecting this too, such as garlic and alcohol.

    DIFFERENT TYPES OF WAX

We all have different types of wax, and this is incredibly down to genetics, either consisting of wet or dry wax. Depending on your heritage, you will be more predisposed to either wet or dry wax, with most European and African descendants having wet wax, and dry wax more typically found in Asian descents.

    DANGERS OF EARS BUDS

Cotton buds are one of the main causes for damaging the ear canal and eardrum. They are responsible for pushing wax further into the ear causing blockages and pain. Although its tempting to try and remove this yourself its always best to get this professionally and safely removed by an expert.
